FAA written/knowledge test
The Private Pilot FAA written/knowledge test for airplanes consists of 60
multiple-choice questions selected from other 700 published questions. To pass, you must
receive a score of 70% or better. Check out the test scores
at the national level.
Authorization to take the FAA written/knowledge test
To take the knowledge test, FAR 61.105 requires applicants to have received and log
ground training from an authorized instructor or completed a home-study course on the
aeronautical knowledge areas listed in paragraph (b) of that section.
What to bring to take the FAA written/knowledge test
- Authorization to take the test.
- Picture identification of yourself.
- The flight computer and navigational plotter you are familiar with and have used before.
- A pocket calculator you are familiar with and have used before.
Note: Paper and pencils are supplied at the examination site. Check the batteries of
the electronic devices you plan to use.
Taking the FAA knowledge test
- Register by calling one of the computer testing center.
- Provide a positive proof of identification. It must include your
photograph, date of birth, signature, and actual residential address.
- Present your logbook endorsement or authorization form from your instructor.
- Sign in on the testing center's daily log.
- A person from the testing center will assist you to log on your assigned computer
station, download your test, and go through the on-line introduction and sample test. Make
sure you understand how to skip questions, move forward and backward, and change your
answer.
- Once you start the actual test, you will have 2.5 hours to complete it.
- After you complete the test, an Airman Computer Test Report will be printed and
validated. Don't lose it, you will need to present it to take your flight
test. The written test is valid for 2 years.
- Sign out on the testing center's daily log.
Retesting after failure
An applicant for a written/knowledge test who fails that test may reapply for the test
only after the applicant has received:
- The necessary training from an authorized instructor who has determined that the
applicant is proficient to pass the test; and
- An endorsement from an authorized instructor who gave the applicant the additional
training.
