Before you can fly solo, you need to obtain a Medical Certificate which will also be your Student Pilot Certificate.
Who may give medical examinations
Any Aviation Medical Examiner may give examination for the 2nd - or 3rd- medical certificate. The examination for the 1st class certificate must be given by a specifically designated medical examiner. A list of the Aviation Medical Examiners may obtained at your local FSDO or your flight school..
Minimum vision requirements for 3rd class Medical Certificates
- Distant vision of 20/40 or better in each eye separately, with or without corrective lenses.
- Near vision of 20/40 or better in each eye separately, with or without corrective lenses.
Special issuance of Medical Certificates
If the minimums requirements are not met, the Federal Air Surgeon may authorize, at his discretion, a Special Issuance of Medical Certificate. The Federal Air Surgeon may request, for this purpose, a special medical flight test, practical test, or medical evaluation. Ask your Aviation Medical Examiner.
Duration of Medical/Student Pilot Certificate
Regardless of the class (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) of the Medical/Student Pilot Certificate, it will expire at the end of:
- The 36th month after the month of the date of the examination shown on the certificate if the person has not reached his or her 40th birthday on or before the date of examination; or
- The 24th month after the month of the date of the examination shown on the certificate if the person has reached his or her 40th birthday on or before the date of examination.
