What is ground school?
Ground school teaches you the principles, procedures, and regulations that you will put
into practice in an airplane. It should prepare you to pass:
- The FAA written/knowledge test; and
- The oral quiz of the FAA checkride

What makes a ground school, a good ground school?
- It translates theory into clear and meaningful concepts that you can use!
- It covers more than just the knowledge required to pass the tests.
- It provides you support while you are learning.
- It keeps you motivated and eager to learn more.
- It meets the FAA requirements (minimum 35 hours).
What are the ground school options?
Scheduled classroom course
- PROS: Group and instructor support. Efficient and organized instruction.Very inexpensive
per hour.
- CONS: Must comply with schedule requirements. Information is delivered only once. (Some
schools offer lifetime refresher privileges.Great value. Look for it.)
One-on-one with flight instructor
- PROS: Personalized. Flexible schedule.
- CONS: Usually very costly (average $40 per hour a 35-hour course would total
$1400!). Information is delivered only once.
Home-study course
- PROS: Study whenever you want. You can review the material as many
times as needed.
- CONS: No support while learning. Many video course include only
16 hours of video instruction. Requires a lot of will power and more
total study time.
