What is ground school?

Ground school teaches you the principles, procedures, and regulations that you will put into practice in an airplane. It should prepare you to pass:

• The FAA written/knowledge test; and
• The oral quiz of the FAA checkride

• It translates theory into clear and meaningful concepts that you can use!
• It covers more than just the knowledge required to pass the tests.
• It provides you support while you are learning.
• It keeps you motivated and eager to learn more.
• It meets the FAA requirements (minimum 35 hours).

What are the ground school options?

Scheduled classroom course

• PROS: Group and instructor support. Efficient and organized instruction.Very inexpensive per hour.
• CONS: Must comply with schedule requirements. Information is delivered only once. (Some schools offer lifetime refresher privileges.Great value. Look for it.)

One-on-one with flight instructor

• PROS: Personalized. Flexible schedule.
• CONS: Usually very costly (average $40 per hour — a 35-hour course would total $1400!). Information is delivered only once.

Home-study course

• PROS: Study whenever you want. You can review the material as many
  times as needed.
• CONS: No support while learning. Many video course include only
  16 hours of video instruction. Requires a lot of will power and more
  total study time.
